The valley floor is river deposit that can be soft and wet, while lots climbing toward the foothills get colder winters and more freeze-thaw cycles than anywhere closer to the water. Both change how we build the base and specify the mix. For Sultan driveways we recommend a broom finish almost every time, and it is a safety decision more than a style one. Exposed aggregate and smooth troweled surfaces get slippery in this wet climate. The broom pass leaves fine lines in the surface that give tires and shoes traction when the driveway has been wet for weeks, which in Sultan is most of the year.

Acreage and gravel access roads are common, so we plan equipment access and concrete delivery carefully before pour day. Rebar and fiber go into every Sultan driveway we build, and we set the rebar up in the slab where it can hold the concrete together, not lying flat on the dirt where it does nothing. Reinforcement will not stop concrete from ever cracking, but it keeps any crack tight and both sides level instead of separating and lifting.
